Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Loss Treatment

Millions suffer from hair loss in the US, both men and women. 80% of women by the age of 60 will have noticeable hair loss. Yes, there are over-the-counter topical and prescription drugs that can be used daily that can help, but PRP can be highly effective. PRP or platelet rich plasma for hair regrowth can improve hair density without surgery or harmful side effects. This concentrated PRP contains healing growth factors and stem cells to help stimulate and regenerate hair cells. Your blood is collected by a blood draw, centrifuged and the PRP collected. Microneedling with PRP is performed in the areas of hair loss. Then PRP is directly into the areas of hair loss to further stimulate. This produces increased blood supply to the follicles, increased hair shaft size, increased growth phase of the hair, and decreased hair loss. This is done in a series for initial stimulation, then 2-4 yearly to continue stimulation of the hair regrowth cycle.

Questions and Answers

How do I know if I am a good candidate for the PRP hair loss treatment?

Dr. Twigg will evaluate you for a proper diagnosis and create a treatment plan.

How many PRP treatments are required?

Treatments may vary based on your need. Usually, several monthly treatments are initially recommended (4-6 or more). Once this has been completed, maintenance treatments are recommended on average 2-4 times yearly, but this may vary.

How long do PRP treatments take?

Treatments are quick after your blood has been drawn, centrifuged and PRP collected. This takes 15-20 minutes. After this, it usually takes 15-30 minutes to fully complete at most.

Does the PRP hair loss treatment hurt?

There can be some discomfort during the procedure due to scalp sensitivity, however, Dr. Twigg will utilize cold/ice therapy and topical numbing agents to minimize any potential discomfort.

What is the recovery time?

There is no specific downtime or long recovery process. The scalp may be tender to touch. You may shower with warm water, but no hot showers for at least 48 hours. Also, you should not put any harsh chemicals on your scalp for at least 48 hours.

Will this cure my thinning hair forever?

No. This is not a cure. This is a treatment only. There is no cure for baldness or thinning hair (androgenic alopecia). The genetic medical problem will always remain. However, regular treatments can slow down baldness by increasing the hair’s density.

When can I expect to start seeing hair re-growth?

Hair regrowth takes time to occur and see. Typical regrowth begins by the 2nd treatment at 10%. By 6 months, after a full course of treatments, 30-50% of regrowth may be seen. These may still be short, but growing out now.
