Combination Medium Depth Chemical Peels
Various agents are used to obtain the medium depth level peel. These types of peels address more extensive skin problems from advanced age-related damage to deep acne scarring. Medium depth peels treat age spots, lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, scarring, acne scarring, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and even skin tone. Both pre- and post-treatment therapies are often used. You will be required to return for follow up visits 2 days after your peel, then at 7 days and 2 weeks.
Questions and Answers
How do I prepare for a medium depth peel?
Dr. Twigg will first evaluate your skin, discuss medical-grade skincare home products to begin using, and typically perform a couple of light chemical peels to begin preparing the skin for treatment. In addition, it is common to begin topical retinoids and a topical skin lightening agent to help prevent hyperpigmentation. This will start at least 6 weeks prior to your peel. You will need strict sun avoidance, use the recommended broad spectrum sunscreen, and when outdoors use clothing protection with a wide-brimmed hat at all times.
Will a medium depth peel hurt?
If pain is a concern, a topical numbing agent can be applied to the skin prior to the procedure as well as taking an oral over-the-counter pain reliever. However, many need no pain relief, and will feel an intense stinging only during the procedure that is tolerable and decreased with a handheld fan.
What can I expect after my peel?
Your skin will be red and may be swollen for several days. It will develop a crust and dry layer on the surface. It will appear gray-brown on the surface, particularly in areas of pre-existing pigmented lesions. The skin will be very tight, then begin to peel. You may have some scabbing. Do not pick at, peel, or rub your skin. Do not pull off any dry skin. This can cause scarring, pigmentation, and staining to occur. You will need time off of work to heal. Your skin may take 10-14 days to heal. You cannot wear any makeup during this time. You must use the products I recommend. Strict sun avoidance is a must for the next 6 months. You must use broad spectrum sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers the entire face for at least 6 months when outside at any time. You should do this for the rest of your life. Do not re-damage the skin you just so lovingly repaired. You will need to return to the office for regular visits, perhaps as often as every 2 days. But initially, follow up is scheduled at 2 days, 7 days, and 14 days.
