Kybella
Kybella is a nonsurgical option for moderate to severe submental fullness under the chin, or the double chin. The extra fat below the chin could be dramatically affecting your appearance and be present even if you are thin. The deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is injected into the submental area to break down and destroy fat cells. Over time, these fat cells are cleared by the body, never to return. Multiple sessions are required to achieve your desired results and noticeable reduction in the fullness beneath the chin.
Questions and Answers
I have a double chin. Will Kybella help and how many treatments will I need?
A consultation will first be done with discussion of your concerns and examination of the area. If you are a good candidate for Kybella, you can expect to need anywhere between 2-6 treatments for your desired outcome. I will recommend the number of treatment sessions I think you will need to achieve results, however, you may require up to 6. This depends on the amount of fatty tissue or fullness present beneath the chin area as well as other factors.
How often can I have Kybella treatments done?
Each treatment must be at least 30 days apart.
What can I expect during and after my Kybella treatment?
You will have a numbing cream applied before beginning for several minutes. During the treatment, you can expect to have some stinging-burning sensation as well as itching and discomfort. Afterward, the area will swell and become red with some discomfort or pain development. Numbness can accompany this with areas of hardness. Prominent swelling can be present for several days. This should be expected and any planned social or work commitment noted when scheduling your appointment. There can also be bruising in some areas. Rare additional side effects can occur, such as uneven smile or facial muscle weakness in 4% in clinical studies with resolution. In addition, trouble swallowing has occurred in 2% in clinical studies.
How long does Kybella take to perform?
The procedure is fairly quick to perform. Total time is approximately 15-20 minutes, although, time in the office may be a bit longer due to topical anesthesia (numbing) cream application and cold packs used after the procedure is completed for several minutes.
Is everyone with a double chin a candidate for Kybella?
Actually, no. There are several reasons and patients that should not have this treatment, and this is the reason for a good consultation before getting a treatment. If you’ve had surgery on your neck, have an infection, have loose skin on the neck or chin area, bleeding disorder or taking medications that prevents blood from clotting normally, are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, and multiple other reasons, you may not be a good candidate to have Kybella performed. These are some things for discussion during a consultation, as there may be other treatments that can be done to improve the look of your neck/chin area.
