Botox
If you’ve scowled in the mirror and saw those furrows between the brows, raised your eyebrows and witnessed the horizontal waves across your forehead, or have not been pleased with the crow’s feet creeping more deeply around the corners of your eyes, then a wrinkle-relaxer such as Botox or Xeomin may be for you. These can relax the wrinkles in other areas as well, but are most commonly used on the upper face. Advanced techniques, only done by the most highly trained, can be done under the eyes for smoothing out the lines and wrinkles beneath the eyes or flattening the bulges called jellyrolls that some have when smiling under the eyes. Other useful advanced procedures for neuromodulators are brow lifts to elevate drooping brows, softening the not-so-cute bunny lines around the nose, smoker’s lines, and pulling up the corners of a drooping mouth. Botox and Xeomin can be effectively used to flatten the bands of the neck that protrude, causing the neck to look old, or to thin out a square face, making it more feminine-appearing. Additionally, if you have a gummy smile, in other words, you show your gums when you smile, Botox or Xeomin can be used to improve this as well. These are only but a few uses for these treatments.
Types used:
- Botox—most commonly known and a great product by Allergan.
- Xeomin—another great neuromodulator by Merz Aesthetics
Questions and Answers
How long does it take Botox to work?
You will start to see some weakness in the muscle groups injected in about 2-4 days, but full effects of the dose used for both Botox and Xeomin will take a full 10-14 days for most individuals. Some areas, such as the undereye area are quick to respond to treatment, and will work within just a few days. Dr. Twigg will instruct you about this further.
Where should I get Botox done?
After your consultation, photos, and discussion, you and Dr. Twigg will come up with a treatment plan that will best suit you. You will be treated, then come back for your follow up appointment in 10-14 days to view your results and for any touch-ups that may be needed.
How long will Botox last?
On average, Botox and/or Xeomin lasts 3 months in the upper face, but for some it may be less, others a little longer. The lower face particularly around the mouth area lasts, on average, about 2 months for most.
If I start getting Botox, will my wrinkles be worse if I decide to stop?
No. Your wrinkles will not be worse if you suddenly stop. In fact, your wrinkles will likely still be better because you have not been creating those wrinkles over and over again for a period of time.
Does Botox hurt?
You may feel a little bit of discomfort from a very tiny needle with the injections only. I generally use a topical numbing agent and a topical skin-nerve vibrator to reduce discomfort in areas where able.
Am I too old or am I too young to get Botox done?
This is a great question. You may get neuromodulator benefits well into older age groups, but reduced amounts may be needed. The best thing to do is to be evaluated by your doctor to see if you would benefit from this. You may benefit from other types of services as well or instead of neuromodulators or just using these in specific areas only. Now on the flip side. Usually, until you are an adult, you wouldn’t necessarily need neuromodulators, however, these are beneficial as a preventative agent to stop wrinkles from occurring. Therefore, starting these in the early to mid-twenties is an excellent decision for most and in some individuals who have prominent facial expressiveness, those wrinkles may have already begun early on.
Can I schedule a Botox appointment if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. While you are pregnant or breastfeeding, I do not advise you to have any elective procedures. In addition, if you are planning to become pregnant within the next three months, you should avoid doing elective procedures, as it is not known if these could affect your unborn child.
Do I really need to return in 10-14 days after I’ve had my Botox or Xeomin done?
It is in your best interest to return after your Botox or Xeomin in 10-14 days so that Dr. Twigg can evaluate your results. This is especially important when first getting this done, however, can even be beneficial to assure you are still getting the results you desire after doing this for some time. You may not know that your results could be better, but she will. It is not uncommon, especially at first, to need to adjust dosing to meet your needs.
